Over at Bokardo, they’ve posted a great list of 9 Lessons for Would-Be Bloggers. I ran into it at ProBlogger, as Darren added his own comments. I recommend that anyone considering taking up blogging go check it out. You’ll be surprised by some of his thoughts. I would like to expand his list to 10 though.
People will be interested in <insert random seemingly obscure topic of interest here> - I’ve told people that they should blog on one thing or another, and they often respond with, “but who would read that?” You would be shocked to see how many people are actually interested in the most obscure topics. I can guarantee that you’re not the only one that finds hand cream fascinating. Surely, there’s a community of drying-paint-watchers out there just waiting for someone to organize them.
So, don’t let the disinterest of those around you sway you from starting a blog. Besides, the best part about starting a narrow-niche blog is the complete lack of competition. There may be a lot more people interested in business and personal finance than brown shades of shag carpeting, but I’ve got a lot more (excellent) competition to deal with.
