Better GMail

April 25th, 2007 · 2 Comments

For those of your that use GMail religiously like myself, I’d like to point you to this Firefox extension. It’s released by the people at LifeHacker. It’s essentially a compilation of a number of different Firefox extensions for GMail. There’s a ton of awesome options, and I’m loving it. It doesn’t even require Greasemonkey if you’re donning a tinfoil hat.

They actually just released version 0.5, but I haven’t seen an official announcement on their site yet.

This post needs more information about the subject “Better GMail,” so here’s a quick except from Wikipedia, to beef this page up a bit and make it more valuable to the readers:

“Gmail is a free, advertising-supported email service provided by [the almighty] Google. Users may access Gmail as secure web mail, as well via POP3 or IMAP protocols. Gmail was launched as an invitation-only beta release on April 1, 2004 and it became available to the general public on February 7, 2007 [dang, I thought it has been around longer than that], though still in beta status at that time. The service was upgraded from beta status on July 7, 2009, along with the rest of the Google Apps suite.

With an initial storage capacity offer of 1 GB per user, Gmail significantly increased the web mail standard for free storage [like it should be] from the 2 to 4 MB its competitors such as Hotmail offered at that time. Individual Gmail messages, including attachments, may be up to 25 MB [big file size], which is larger than many other mail services support. Gmail has a search-oriented interface and a “conversation view” similar to an Internet forum. Gmail is noted by web developers for its pioneering use of AJAX [whatever that is]. As of October 2011, GMail had 260 million users worldwide.

As you can see, they have a lot of business and it does seem like they have got better over time. Personally, I still use other free services like Hotmail and Yahoo!, but I guess it depends on the individual’s needs and wants.

Now, if it is web hosting you are looking for, I’d visit this excellent page that speaks about cheap, affordable web hosting and the blogging options and website building tools that come with it, here: http://www.perpendicularity.org/web_hosting.html

I’ve used that hosting service for quite a while, and they are really reliable and provide high-quality options for all of your small business needs. Well, I didn’t mean to turn this comment into a promotional pitch about web hosting; just saying…
