This post will only encompass one thing that should be punishable by death. But, I have a feeling this could quickly become a series, so I went plural on you, hardcore.
Websites/Ads with auto-playing sound.
I get it. You want to get my attention. This is not the way to do it. When I’m casually browsing Digg in between compiles at work and some woman randomly starts talking to me about the inadequate length of my unspeakables, it easily qualifies as an uncomfortable situation.
I find myself frantically moving for that ‘x’ in the in the corner, my savior. Naturally, my panic has severely limited my hand eye coordination, and I’m quickly lost in a sea of close boxes with nothing but a prayer. I know, it sounds dramatic. It is dramatic
Obviously, I’m much too terrified to venture back into the same territory, so whatever glorious bit of linkbait or microcephalic criminal mishaps happen to be waiting on the other side are completely lost on me. This simply leaves me further frustrated.
I’m sure most people can share my view on this matter. I have a very hard time believing that this strategy actually encourages more clicking. Therefore, classified as nothing more than a public nuisance, I would like to nominate all creators of said ads for my mandatory post-birth abortion program. There is no official list for the program yet, as I’m still trying to work the legislation through congress - wheels to be greased with hard liquor and loose women. It won’t be long now, and I’m keeping my own list of candidates.

I’m sure ads with auto-playing sound would get a lot more clicks if they had a blonde in a tiny bikini and a recording of her saying “Click here to have a good time, big boy!”

Haha, probably. I imagine someone has taken that strategy, but I haven’t seen it yet.

I agree. It is annoying and if you’re trying to listen to something else on your computer, even more so.
Which is why I’m planning on starting a holy jihad against MySpace.

Oh yeh theres no way it actually helps with your ctr. I’m with you a hundred percent instantly go for my x. But you know something else I hate, video. Videos fine but if you have 34 videos on one page that all auto play obviously, or you would think, this is a bad idea.

I suggest public hanging for all supporters of pop-up and pop-under ads as well!

I completely agree. I chuckle everytime I hear something start playing on someone’s computer at work. And I laugh even more when I hear them scrambling to turn it off! That’s why I always leave headphones plugged in at work so that never happens.

totally agree, that and those pop-up ads that you need to search for half hour to find the ‘Close’ button. Completely annoying. Cheers

Markk had a great point. Myspace is a total joke! You can’t be surfing through people while listening to your own music. What a headache! Plus websites always play annoying music to get your attention. Another pet peeve is when a TV commercial comes on, and it’s always louder than the show you are watching.

Hear me out, that’s an amazing thread…

Whenever I hear music playing when I load a website, I usually close the browser immediately. Its one of my online pet peeves

Can’t agree more. Autoplaying sound can be very annoying. Have visited one blog with that once, and never return.

It’s really annoying; those pop-ups and the like. Got to talk straight if one wants to capture an audience and not resort to this flops.

I like to include the unknown person in your email whenever you have open window for either yahoo or google. It also pop up in your screen and its annoying. I do not know how they get my email address and i do not know how can i block them.

Aw man, totally. An Sound Ad bit keeps playing on my computer and I can’t figure out how to get rid of it.. I delete a process from task manager and it goes away for awhile, then reappears at some random moment.. so frustrating!

I hate sites with auto playing sound. I’ve had people ask me to make their sites do that and I’ve told them no, it’s annoying I won’t do it.

Wow, it is nice to hear somebody put this one in writing! At least if you are going to have music, try and make it something that is not completely expected and annoying!

With a title that says “Things That Should be Punishable by Death” and to actually read what the post was about, I’d say that the question of whether Ad Revenue is the thing to die for, perhaps may be the main query at hand.
Yep, the things people do to earn a few extra greenbacks in this world; oh, how so mundane… Ha-ha!
42 Mundane? // Aug 29, 2011 at 1:27 pm
Wait a minute… How come the guy ^^^ before me posted twice; why can’t I? Hmm, maybe SPAM should be punishable by death alongside the ones who are responsible for pop-up ads? Hell, I don’t know… Best of luck to all of ya, who are out there typing for pennies and chasing the bling-bling. LOL!

Playing commercials louder than the programme really gets to me too. Especially when you’re not expecting it and your TV goes 20 bars louder than what you put it at. I’m jumpy for god’s sake!

Auto play sounds drive me completely out of my mind, thankfully it seems to be that fewer and fewer sites are using these anymore. Sheeeesh.
